5-Minute Meals
Do you ever have those days, when you’re runnning on empty, can’t brain, and cooking a full meal feels like climbing Mount Everest? Me too. We need some winning ideas for 5-minute meals.

Quick Alternatives When You’re Out of Spoons
First, let’s have a look at the obvious alternatives. The ones we’ve all tried—and are sick and tired of. Because who wants to live on take-out, freezer meals, and nothing?
- Order take-out. Expensive, and usually not all that healthy, but it’s an option.
- Heat up a freezer meal. With some luck, you’ve even got a couple of home-made meals in your freezer.
- Make a sandwich. Not very nourishing, but at least you won’t starve.
- Skip a meal. It’s the worst possible choice, but I’m afraid we’ve all done it at one time or another.
But what if you could prepare a wholesome meal in just five minutes? Would that be too daunting? Sometimes, the answer might still be yes, but more often you’d probably be able to do that: spend just five minutes on your meal.
5-Minute Meal Prep Ideas
I’ll be honest: I don’t know of any ways to prepare an entire meal from scratch in just five minutes. But I do know what I can achieve in such a small pocket of time. And sometimes, that can make all the difference. So let’s have a look at some 5-minute meal prep ideas.
Here are some examples of small tasks that won’t take more than five minutes each.
- peel and chop an onion
- peel some garlic, put the cloves in a container, and store in the fridge
- clean and slice some veggies
- peel some potatoes
- plonk some ingredients in my slow cooker or instant pot, add liquid, and get a soup or stew started
- throw some leftovers in an oven dish and let the oven do the hard work
- cut up some fruit for a smoothie
- chuck some ingredients in a blender and make a smoothie
- wipe my sink and worktop
5-Minute Meals to Make Life Easier
Remember I said I don’t know of any ways to prepare an entire meal from scratch in just five minutes? That’s still true, but… we can cheat! Ever tried slow cooker meal prep? Because, honestly, my slow cooker is probably my best kitchen buddy. I don’t know what I’d do without it.
Have a look at this delicious Slow Cooker Courgette Soup, for example. Sure, it takes some planning ahead, but the prep itself takes only five minutes. Tops.

Din’t plan ahead? No problem. Try this Zero Spoons Oatmeal. It maynot be a 5 Michelin star dinner, but it’s quick, tasty, and healthy, and you won’t go to bed with growling tummy.

Got potato wedges and broccoli in the freezer? Drop ‘m on a plate and zap in the microwave for 5 minutes. Add a dollop of (vegan) mayonnaise, and you’ve got dinner.

Why 5-Minute Prep Works
Five minutes may not seem like much—and that’s exactly why it works. It takes the pressure off, both mentally and physically. You don’t have to stand in a hot kitchen for half an hour or longer. There’s no overwhelm. Just one tiny task at a time. But five minutes here, and five more minutes there… it all adds up. That’s how quick healthy meals are made.

It doesn’t have to be hard. You don’t have to make a meal in one go. Working in increments of just five minutes at a time will get your meal on the table too. Think about it. How can you implement this idea in your life?
